World Bird Research is a web portal that is free to members who register with the site and provides a searchable database (in English and Latin) of bird species.
Initially, the database will contain the 90 plus North American species banded at the Vancouver Avian Research Centre’s banding station in British Columbia, Canada but it is our hope that the database will be expanded to become a repository for many of the birds of the world as ornithologists, researchers and photographers contribute to the site.
Each species account provides comprehensive information on identification and molt and ageing of birds in the hand using high resolution photographs with precise information and detailed instruction on ageing using molt and plumage criteria.
Designed as a study tool the portal is an invaluable guide in the field for use at research stations and an invaluable teaching/training tool for labs and classrooms.
After signing in to a secure page the user can search for the required species (English and Latin names are currently available but other languages can easily be added).
Once the species is found the content for each species is broken in to several segments:
Identification information primarily for researchers working with birds in the hand – this section includes:
o Range map
o High quality photos (including a carousel of additional photographs forming a gallery of high quality images of each species)
o Links to similar species
Ageing & Sexing – this section is the flagship of each species account containing a molt summary, high resolution wing photos with arrows pointing to retained/replaced feathers, detailed descriptions of molt sequences and comprehensive instructions and tips to accurately age birds in the hand.
‘Live’ graphs showing capture rates which pull from a live database. These graphs can be expanded to include a significant amount of additional research/statistical information and could also include data provided by other research organizations.
General banding information and terminology – this section provides an index, information on ageing and sexing techniques and explanations of the terminology used in the site.
A live forum will be added where members can share/exchange information on the site.
Researchers are invited to add their species to the site using the standard templates created and provided by World Bird Research.
To ensure the integrity of the information added each region has a moderator appointed to verify the accuracy of the information provided before posting to the site. Our goal is to maintain each species account in an identical format with the same high quality images and accuracy of information.
The portal has huge potential as a repository for species accounts from around the globe and it is our hope that individuals, groups and organizations from around the world will contribute their species identification and molt and ageing information and that wildlife and bird photographers will also consider donating high quality images to provide an archive where detailed information on the world’s birds may be accessed in a single location.
All images contributed to the World Bird Research portal will remain the property of the individual photographer whose name as author will appear on each image submitted. All images will be resized to 72 DPI resolution and to 780 pixel width ensuring photographs cannot be used for commercial purposes and the original high resolution image (if supplied) returned to the photographer.
In addition, right click will be disabled with a graphic appearing stating that the image is protected and the following legend will appear beneath each photograph:
